This collection, or style, is making a statement about various endangered animals throughout the world in various states of recovery or extinction. As I make these statements about these beautiful animals that are slowly disappearing from our world, I explore what watercolors can do on surfaces not meant for it (me being a rebel). Make sure you make it all the way to the bottom where I have a time lapse of this piece being created! Or use this link to cheat
planning
what sizes to use and where they go
The planning stage takes a minute but is fun exploring how this puzzle can fit together. There are so many questions that need answers...
In this video I show you how I came to using the number and sizes of pieces in the positions that I used for Humpback Whale.
prepping
Getting the panels ready
01
I'm pouring gesso all over the panels I just got... I usually want the really cheap gesso, so that it won't level out... I DON'T want smooth... I want a texture!
This can be done before you decide what goes where, and since this process takes at least a day to dry before sketching can even begin, I always get a jump on it as soon as I get the panels.
02
Here I'm taking a palette knife and spreading the gesso. I kinda went overboard with the gesso on that panel and had to scoop some off onto other panels... whoops. Later in the process I decided to stain the edges so in the future I'll be sure to tape off those edges to keep the gesso from dripping on them.
Once the gesso is somewhat dry-ish. I take the palette knife and bounce it on the surface to create peaks in the gesso.. then I hover the knife over the tops of those peaks to knock them down just a touch... otherwise it looks like a hedgehog. lol.
03
It's super important to actually hang the piece before sketching and painting.. so that you can hang the pieces up and step back to check to see if the image flows across the way its supposed to and later to make sure that the colors match and the values flow.
